Gent's We have to discuss three different aspects here.
First, The Observations. As noted by Bjørn, these are often concerning ongoing auctions, where there is either doubt or certainty of the 'falsiness' of the item. In these cases, Fakebase should (does?) work as a place, where we can have the discussion 'is this fake?'. That was why we started this site back in 2004, actually. The nature of this process brings the risk of actually discussing something that is NOT a fake.
Secondly, The Objects. These are the items classified as being fakes, falsifications, tampered with etc. The quality of information on THESE items has to be qualified, exact and true. The only way to achieve this is to have the knowledge from many different collectors to our use. In general, this is where we are today, with a lot of knowledge available on the danish, icelandic and finnish areas. There will be, however, cases where the knowledge present is not deep enough, and if there is any doubt, the items should not be present in the database. We have had situations, where new information has turned up, on items already in the database. The new information showed, that we had been wrong, and the items were moved to the Genuine Archive. This is how we should react, always to the best of our collected knowledge.
Finally, The Archive. Here we save the items deemed Genuine. Not all, but those where the discussion brought new or important knowlegde to our minds.Knowledge we can use in the future, whenever a like item turns up. If we did not save this information, a lot of knowledge would be lost. In the past (pre 2006) we did not save this information, and we missed it dearly on many occasions.
Well, those are my words for now, almost. The last i wish to say concerns the risk of having people turn the courts on us. Well, if 'people' are mad, because we rightfully discusses and shows a fake item, so be it, let them come. If the 'people' are mad, because we discuss a genuine item of theirs, we will bend over immediately and remove all traces of the item. We will try to argue with them of course, because as mentioned we would like to keep the information and add to the collected knowledge.
Those were the words for now, feel free to add your comments (i have full editorial power, however :-) ).
