| Zeppelin fakes exist in two main variations. First there are false overprints on right base stamp. If so, you have to compare the overprint's font, colour and measurements.
Because the base stamp (10 mk Saimaa Light violet) is expensive as such, poor forgers have used the cheap Dark violet as base stamp. Here is a fake overprint on Dark violet and for comparison a genuine Zeppelin. In this fake the overprint looks thick and smudgy.
The base stamps differ not only by colour but the newer Dark violet has been re-engraved. So, comparing the forest on the little islands and clouds tells one in no time which is which. With poor scans it is not always easy to do by colour. This is demonstrated in the second photo : By colour the scanned stamp looks like fake but examining the forests you see the base stamp is OK. As far as I can see, the overprint is also good.
Another story is the rare misprint ZEPPELIN 1830 (one / sheet of 50). Expertizing is recommended! |

JuhaT (20-10-2007) For clarity: the stamp in solo picture is GENUINE, but the scan is strangely coloured looking like a Dark violet.
eBay killed the auction of the fake in big picture in spite of the fact that it was all the time described as forgery. If this happens more often, it will pose a problem to fake collectors. Who knows about eBay policy here?
JuhaT (17-12-2007) Ex.2: Fake cancel?
Used Zeppelin is more valuable than mint - catalogue values MNH 170 / O 200 EUR (Norma 2007). So it would be attempting to 'use' a hinged stamp afterwards and wash the gum away. Here we have a non-Finnish round cancel. It seems to be dated in 1933? Genuine use was only a few days around 24.9.1930, non-Helsinki cancels are rare. The stamp is for sale 'as is, with no guarantee to cancel'.
Bjørn Hinnerichsen (07-01-2010) Another fake Zeppelin added from eBay.com - wrong base stamp: 2nd engraving. Cancel: Helsinki, but must be from 1932 or later. Genuines from 1930 on 1st engraving (light violet). Seller contacted.
Bjørn Hinnerichsen (07-01-2010) Item withdrawn.
